"I don't want dancers who want to dance, I want dancers who need to dance."
- George Balanchine

Adults

Central School of Ballet Phnom Penh offers classes specifically designed for the adult student. Whether they are just beginning or are continuing their dance training, they will find the right class level for them that is challenging and allows them to learn new skills. CSBPP’s programme for adults allows them to advance at their own pace through a carefully constructed programme of increasingly complex exercises, allowing them ample time for learning that is both comprehensive and meaningful. All are welcome, and the only requirement is the desire to dance.

Classical Ballet

Beginner Ballet Class

Central School of Ballet Phnom Penh Beginner Ballet Class is specifically designed for the adult student who has had NO previous dance training. It is an introduction to ballet, making it easy for absolutely everyone to keep up. This class includes the very basics of ballet and gives the student the knowledge to join a more advanced class when ready. The class starts off with simple exercises at the barre and the second half of the class takes part in the centre, focusing on control and mastering the basic steps of ballet. Students need not wear a leotard and tights for this class (sweats or yoga pants are fine).

The Beginner Ballet Class is held every Tuesday from 19:00 to 20:30.

Foundation Technique Class

Central School of Ballet Phnom Penh's Foundation Technique class is structured to provide students with a firm foundation in ballet technique and vocabulary in a series of steps. This class is mainly for people who danced when they were younger and remember the very basics of ballet and are returning to ballet after years away and are looking for a “refresher” course, or have a lot of experience in another dance style and want to quickly cover all the basics of ballet before advancing. Exercises include fundamental barre work as well as basic turns and jumps. These are then combined in simple movement phrases.

Foundation Technique classes are held Mondays from 19:00 to 20:30.

Intermediate Class

CSBPP's Intermediate class allows more technically proficient students the ability to strengthen their skills in a complex and challenging class which emphasises the complete range of classical ballet technique taught at a professional level. Classes include adagio, complicated turns, grand allegro and pre-pointe work.

Intermediate classes are held Thursdays from 19:00 to 20:30 and Thursdays from 18:15 to 19:45.

Contemporary

Contemporary classes combine Cunningham, Graham and Limón techniques, taking the best of each to give students well balanced training. CSBPP's classes involve extensive warm up exercises designed to strengthen the dancer while improving flexibility and technical accuracy; quicker, more complex centre exercises improve balance and movement quality with a variety of challenging combinations with original choreography set to a diverse musical selection.
Contemporary dance classes are for both beginners and intermediate dancers.

Contemporary classes are held Wednesdays from 19:00 to 20:30.

Body Conditioning

Dancers have the most amazing bodies. They stand not too muscly, still lean, but powerful and confident. For people who do not feel ready to face the rigours of classical ballet training, but still would like to get the type of body dancers have, Central School of Ballet Phnom Penh's Body Conditioning programme will help them build ballet strength.

A typical body conditioning class will be filled with workouts to help them get the overall tone and workout that dancers get from ballet. Almost all of the workouts are based on some ballet move. The exercises combine stretching with strengthening and aim to improve body tone giving students greater flexibility, cardiovascular stamina and better posture. Students will also get a sense of achievement when they learn to master complex combinations that give them the feeling that they are dancing.

Body Conditioning classes are not being offered this term.

In keeping with the traditions of ballet, CSBPP expects and demands that adult students too be disciplined and attentive in class, and maintain a pleasant and positive attitude. No food and no gum are permitted in the studio. Street shoes are not allowed on studio floors, or ballet shoes outside of the studio. Mobile phones should be turned to silent so as not to disrupt class.
